Ways to pass time on a boring camping trip

Camping trips are great fun and we all look forward to them. Prior to the trip, we all prepare, pack and wait anxiously to get in the car and drive. As soon as we get to the camp site, we excitedly take everything out of the car and arrange it in an orderly fashion. Almost without fail, someone will set up the barbecue on, cook something, get the beverages out and we all enjoy a hearty dinner. And all this is done within 2 hours of arriving at the site. And right after the dinner, the excitement just simply disappears and all of wonder when we will go back home.

Maps

Maps
A map is a visual representation of an area—a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes.
Many maps are static two-dimensional, geometrically accurate representations of three-dimensional space, while others are dynamic or interactive, even three-dimensional. Although most commonly used to depict geography, maps may represent any space, real or imagined, without regard to context or scale; e.g. Brain mapping, DNA mapping, and extra-terrestrial mapping.
In outdoor activity or camping, maps are the world reduced to points, lines, and areas, using a variety of visual resources: size, shape, value, texture or pattern, color, orientation, and shape. Maps are an abstraction of our world, a representation of space. Maps are the height of the data pyramid. Maps are interpretations of space at a moment in time. Maps are frequently seen as mere reflectors of the truth. Read more…

Camping Tents - What the Tent Ratings Mean

Been shopping for a new camping tent? Wonder what 3-season or 4-season means? Confused about what a family tent or convertible tent classification means? Let?s try to cut through all the marketing lingo and get down to what you should really look for when you see camping tent ratings or classifications.

When you get right down to it, you should think of a camping tent as either 3-season or 4-season. So what?s in a name?

10 winter camping rules to live by

My buddy Mike Langlois joined me on a frozen Wisconsin River island above Tomahawk for our first winter camping trip. Starting out it was 35?F, so for gear we had summer sleeping bags and a canvas pup tent. What did we know? We were just 12. That night a norther? blew in from the Arctic dropping temps into the minus digits. Had Mike and I geared for ?30?, we could have slept all night rather than jogging inside flimsy sleeping bags trying to keep our blood solid. Luckily, this experience did not turn me off winter camping. But it did teach me a valuable lesson.

First rule of winter camping: Plan for the coldest possible temperatures in your area.
Whether it starts in October or ends in April, winter can be brutal. The most important thing about winter camping is planning. In the summer, make a mistake like getting wet and you can survive. But get soaked at 20?, and you?re in trouble.
